External Linking

« Back to Glossary Index

External links are hyperlinks that take users to sites that aren’t on the same domain as the one they’re on. They are frequently used as referrals to original sources in content marketing. This best practice gives articles more legitimacy and gives viewers more context for online information. External links, like a bibliography for a research paper or presentation, show the resources that the author used.

Why use external links?

External links give readers a simple option to conduct their own fact-checking or read further information. External links also provide credit to the original authors, indicate openness in reporting, and help PageRank flow (also known as Link Juice.)
