XML Sitemap

« Back to Glossary Index

Sitemaps are part of any good SEO strategy. This feature lists all the pages hosted by the website, which can help search engine crawlers identify content that is worth caching. Search engines such as Bing and Yahoo! should be able to discover every page related to your website, but sometimes they need a little help. Having a site map will spread the flames to the ‘net, attracting the attention of crawlers.

The XML sitemap looks different from the standard map brand published on its webpage. XML is designed for search engines, not for people, so they contain URLs, metadata, and other content designed to attract search engines. Unless you like coding, they don’t look pretty. Standard site maps can help Internet users browse websites effectively, showing users where they need to find what they are looking for online. One is under the hood and the other is in the front and center.
